Why You Should Be Using Pinterest If You’re A Writer

I love Pinterest. Seriously, I’m addicted to it and I have been ever since it came out who knows how many years ago. It used to be a way for me to pass the time and bookmark ideas, inspiration, and recipes that I sometimes went back to reference.

Now, Pinterest is an essential asset to my success as an author, freelancer, and blogger. Pinterest is a unique website because it’s not only considered a social media network, it’s also a search engine.

Think about this. Where do you go when you’re searching for something? There are likely two places you’ll turn to: Google and Pinterest. Pinterest is a search engine. It’s one of the top places people turn to online when they are looking for answers. That is something you can absolutely take advantage of as an author.

Promote Your Books/Products

As of the first quarter of 2019, Pinterest has over 291 million active users. That’s a huge audience! Unlike other social media sites, follower numbers aren’t completely indicative of the success you can have on Pinterest. Anyone can see the content you share. It’s much easier and more accessible to reach a wider audience.

You would be crazy not to use Pinterest to your advantage! By promoting your books, blog, products, services, etc on Pinterest, you increase the traffic to your site exponentially.

Furthermore, your posts don’t run the risk of getting lost in the feed like they do on Instagram, for example. As long as you are smart about caption writing, use hashtags in your description, and create a captivating image, your pins can be seen for years to come.

You also don’t need to feel like you can only post a pin once. You can share a pin as many times as you want. Tip: Share it to different boards to increase your reach.

If you are someone who sells products or services for writers or you’re a freelancer, Pinterest is a fantastic way to promote your business. Not only can potential clients learn about you this way, but it actually gives them an outlet to view your portfolio. It’s a win-win!

An Inspirational Place

I don’t know about you, but one of the reasons I first started to use Pinterest was for a little inspiration! I loved finding and pinning quotes. They always came in handy when I needed a clever Instagram caption back in the day!

One thing I recently started doing on Pinterest was creating an aesthetic board. It was something recommended to me by a fellow writer. I had never considered it before! My current WIP is set in the early 2000’s, so I save fashion, style, and trend images from that time period to a dedicated board. It’s a great place to reference when I want to dive into this setting and build the vision.

When I’m writing, I find visualization incredibly important. No matter which setting I’m in, I need to have a clear picture in my mind about what it looks like. I seriously go crazy if I can’t envision it! So, I have a board for that, too! It’s mostly filled with houses or outdoor landscapes. I have to be able to see it so I can paint the picture for my readers.

Valuable Educational Tool

I’m a firm believer in learning. No matter how much experience or knowledge we think we have, we can always learn more. There is so much information on Pinterest. Seriously, you can search for anything you want to learn and have a plethora of knowledge available to you.

As a writer and a freelancer, I’m always looking for ways to better myself. I have found some fantastic content on Pinterest that has been instrumental to my success today. I am so grateful for it!

Make Pinterest A Priority

When it came to choosing the social networks I wanted to be on, I knew I wanted a Pinterest page. But, it wasn’t until recently that I decided to really make it a priority. I knew how beneficial this site could be to my overall success so I had to put it first.

Now, I don’t have a ton of time to dedicate to it, but I make time when I can. I’ve also found tools to help me get pins out there on a consistent basis. Tailwind has been a godsend for me in this case. I sit down every other week to schedule out content for two weeks and I’m ready to go. It’s so easy and has been really beneficial in keeping my visibility on Pinterest high.
